Last week, Yaron Galai, co-founder and president of the global company Outbrain, which connects publishers and advertisers through its platform, visited Ljubljana. He spent most of his time with the Outbrain team in Ljubljana, and also took the time to hang out with members of the Slovenian Technology Forum and media representatives.

Yaron is an outstanding conversationalist, simple and at the same time cosmopolitan, who shared his experience of starting and developing startups.

At the meeting, he stressed that one of the prerequisites is to focus on one thing, but as perhaps the most important he highlighted the willingness to constantly learn and accept failures. Among other things, he says that if you really did your best and the company did not succeed, this is also a way of gaining experience.

When asked why California is still the most attractive environment for startups, he replied that because you can register a business in ten minutes, and the cost for a lawyer is about $200. There, all lawyers know how to legally help startups, know how to plan the issue of shares, how to negotiate investments, and the like. There is a whole ecosystem, and everything is very simple. Even in Israel, the environment is friendly to startups.

How is it in Slovenia? Outbrain has 18 offices around the world. In 2017, they took over the Slovenian company Zemanta and at that time counted the number of employees at 131.

Work between offices is divided into four areas. Research and development centers are in Israel and Slovenia, the company is headquartered in New York, and sales offices are in Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Japan. They also have a so-called global talent center in Ljubljana, where they try to recruit people for different roles for the entire company.

Yaron observes that Slovenians are reluctant to take risks and failures, but he is convinced that people need good looks. He stressed that small countries, such as Slovenia, certainly have an advantage in this segment. The reason is that startups need to focus very quickly on finding business opportunities beyond borders, and global orientation is a prerequisite for the success and existence of such companies.

And where do people like Yaron Galai learn? For himself, he says that mainly from books, because for him reading is like everyday food - abundant, tasty and varied.
